History and Background

Oakdale was founded in 1998 by a group of practitioners who were united in their beliefs on how mental health care services should be delivered. Their vision was to create a mental health care service that was easily accessible, which was properly audited, and which was delivered by qualified professionals. At the time, 3 core values were beginning to emerge in this field. These were that:

  • Anyone, of any age, should have access to the correct type of therapy

  • Therapy should be provided by an appropriate qualified practitioner

  • Therapy should be provided in the correct setting

This new approach to delivering care formed the basis of Oakdale, and the founding practitioners ensured that they were always one step ahead of all other service providers by identifying key problems with existing services and providing innovative solutions to constantly improve care for their clients. They:

  • Implemented outcome measures for all therapies, when this was still a relatively ‘new’ process

  • Formed a set of  standards to ensure no compromise in quality of care

  • Developed cutting-edge therapy programmes delivered by highly qualified professionals

  • Kept at the forefront of new developments in the treatment of mental health problems

  • Ensured a quick and effective triage process

The standards attained as a result of this unwavering determination to be the best in their field led to the Oakdale Centre being one of the first independent mental health service providers to attain accreditation from the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which consequently led to Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) accreditation.

This regulatory approval enabled Oakdale to rapidly evolve from dealing with individual clients, to providing mental health care services on behalf of employers, to winning large NHS tenders. Now over 10 years on, Oakdale has centres in Harrogate,  Halifax and Peterborough, Northumberland and Newcastle.
