The Heart is a powerful and often-used metaphor within Western poetry and literature. Unfortunately there is a polarised view that can say Heart ideas are fluffy, meaningless and lack scientific relevance.

This rather impoverished view is out of step with other cultures, such as in China and India, where the idea of the heart is seen as central in evaluations of psychological and physical health.

New scientific research about the heart and its functions, especially work with people who have had heart transplants, offers a radical and exciting perspective that combines scientific material with a humanistic and even spiritual perspective on how important heart functioning is within our total body/mind.

This new work highlights how the heart can carry memories, how it influences our brain and its functioning far more than the brain influences the heart and how it is interwoven with our personal functioning in a way that is independent of our thinking self. In short the heart can be seen as one of the most powerful and significant regulators in our human system.

The implications are profound in pointing to a holistic and interpersonal approach to Psychotherapy and healing that is as valid in the world of Western science as in the fields of therapy, medicine, literature and art.

The workshop will briefly cover some of this new body of knowledge and may include experiential exercises in self-sensing, other-sensing and working in the relational field.
